When Life Takes an Unexpected Turn
What do you do when life places a sudden bump in the road or throws an unexpected curveball your way?
This is the chapter of life my family and I are walking through right now as we enter the new year 2026!
Laura Downs, my precious mother, has dedicated over 35 years of her life to teaching piano and organ at the same location "Up 'N Down Tempos" in Orange City, Florida. Through her love of music, she has shaped, mentored and inspired generations of students.
On January 19, 2026, she will turn 90 years old—a remarkable milestone. Yet this season of her life has also become one of her most challenging.
In December 2025, my mother suffered a serious fall that resulted in two fractures in her spine, requiring hospitalization and a medical procedure called vertebroplasty, where bone cement was injected to stabilize her spine and relieve pain.
This followed an earlier life-altering fall in November 2023, when she broke her hip and underwent hip replacement surgery.
Despite these hardships, my mother has always been a fighter. For years, she pushed forward—continuing to teach 34–40 students a week, determined to live her lifelong passion.
Unfortunately, this recent injury has taken a greater toll, and her recovery has been slower and more difficult. She is now working toward rehabilitation while facing a significant financial strain.
Like so many others, my mother lost everything during the 2008 economic downturn, including her home and retirement savings, when families could no longer afford music lessons. Just as she began to regain stability, COVID struck—leaving her living week to week simply to survive.
As her daughter and caregiver, it is heartbreaking to watch her struggle. Due to my own financial challenges stemming from the same economic hardships and the pandemic, I am unable to support her fully on my own.
At the same time, I have been working to build a Wellness Spa, and Outdoor Café concept through my commercial property. I am a licensed aesthetician, educator, mentor, and small business owner, but limited funding has restricted operations to a minimal level.
✨ This is why I am launching this fundraising campaign.
Our goal is twofold:
To help my mother cover essential expenses during her recovery.
To generate sustainable income through our community-based businesses so we can continue serving others.

This is our commercial property in Maitland, Florida—a place that has been home to a family owned printing business for over 65 years.
It holds history, hard work, and deep roots in the community serving the Central Florida area.
Now, we are dreaming of a new chapter!
Our vision is to transform this space into a Wellness Spa, complemented by an after-dinner dessert café tucked into the back of the building—a place of restoration, connection, creativity, and inspiration.
Like many small businesses and families, we were deeply impacted by the economic downturn of 2008 and later by COVID. Despite years of effort, these hardships have made it difficult to qualify for traditional funding to bring this dream to life.
Unexpected turns in our life journey have slowed us down—but they have not stopped the vision!
As a licensed Full Specialist Aesthetician, educator, mentor, and small business owner, I am launching this fundraising venture to raise the resources needed to make this dream a reality.
For the past 17 years, I have had the privilege of teaching Skin Care at Cortiva Institute in Maitland. This future wellness spa is more than a business—it is an opportunity.
A place where students can gain real-world, hands-on experience in running a spa: learning operations, business management, client care, and professional confidence as part of their educational journey and a steppingstone for success.
This space would also allow the Cortiva Institute brand to extend into the community—promoting the importance of self-care, holistic wellness, and a balanced approach to health, wellness and beauty.
